Susan Tyler’s love of swimming began long before she arrived on the Winter Park campus with her first ribbon in AAU swimming as an eight and under. By the age of 12 she was ranked #1 in her age group in the 50 meter (long course) butterfly.
After swimming for Glenridge Jr. High and winning medals in both the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly at the State Championships, Susan moved on to WPHS. As a Wildcat, Susan was the County and Conference champion all three years in the 100 yard butterfly, County and Conference Champion in the 200 yard individual medley in 10th and 11th, and County and Conference Champion in the 50 yard freestyle as a senior. She and her sister Celeste (Tyler) Miller held almost all of the County and Conference records from 1964 – 1966. State Championship titles include Champiom in 100 yard butterfly (1965), All American Runner-up (1965), and second place in 50 yeard freestyle (1966).
In 1995 Celeste recruited Susan and their sister Sarah to join in United States Masters Swimming, and they now compete for Sierra Nevada Masters. In 2003 and 2005 Susan was named pool All American for her age group for the fastest times in long course meters 100 and 50 butterfly (2003) and short course meters 50 butterfly (2005). In addition, she was National Champion for her age group in 100 meter (LC) butterfly in 2004.
Susan wrote, “As an age group swimmer, I had the good fortune to swim with girls who went on to swim at WPHS in early 1960’s amd begin the tradition of excellence that persists in 2008. … I hope these women will also be recognized for their contributions to WPHS sports.”
